Locally

  • The small local market towns of Honiton (famous lace making & its abundance of antique shops) and Wellington offer a charming selection of small independent shops & supermarkets. Honiton also has a street market on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
  • There are some fantastic farm shops & delicatessens locally where you can get a real flavour of Devon! Try Ellises Farm, Hemyock (2 miles), The Cheese & Wine Shop, Wellington (6 miles), Bartletts Farm Shop, Honiton (10 miles) or The Strand Stores, Culmstock (4 miles).
  • The opportunities for walking are just fantastic. There are walks from the door. Use some of the OS maps provided to choose your own route or use some of the planned walks here.  One of these walks passes by the cottage's front door (link here).
  • In Devon, you are never too far from the beach! The cottage is around 35 minutes from a selection of coastal gems. Our favourites are Sidmouth (lovely Victorian seaside town with a pebbly and sandy beach AND great rockpools!), Lyme Regis (with a proper sandy beach), Branscombe (quiet location with a great pub in the village itself) and Beer (pebbly beach with mackerel fishing). These beaches form part of the Jurassic coastline (recently given World Heritage Status). Or head up to Saunton Sands (1½ hour drive) for a day of surfing!
  • Lots of National Trust properties with Killerton House & Knightshayes being the closest.
  • Many visitors bring their bikes and there is lots of cycling for all (some hilly & other, more forgiving routes). Your bikes can be stored in the Old Dairy adjacent to the cottage.
  • Three hard tennis courts are available for hire in Hemyock. Please contact Sue Lambert (secretary of Hemyock Tennis Club) on 01823 680664 for more information or pop into the Spar shop in Hemyock.
  • Recommended by previous guests, Yarak is a birds of prey, falconry, eagle and owl centre around 20 mins from the cottage. It has something of offer everyone. You can walk in on the day and watch the birds flying on display or pre-book a hands-on experience and fly them yourself.
  • Every dreamt of making a parachute jump? Sky Dive UK can facilitate this so take the leap whilst away.
  • Cold Habour Mill is a 18th century woollen mill, steam engines, restaurant and shop celebrating Fox Brothers 200 years in the area. Producer of fine pure wool yarn for knitting, weaving for fine Tartan to runners and mats.
  • Otter Valley Dairy produce award-winning artisan ice cream & frozen yogurts, handmade using the milk & cream from their own pedigree dairy herd. The ice cream parlour is open during summer month and is located just off the A303 at Aplins Farm, Monkton, near Honiton (EX14 9QN). Pop in and try this month's flavour!
