Places to eat and drink

There are some fantastic dining experiences awaiting! During your stay try one of these pubs, restaurants or cafes (all of which I have eaten at myself!). Listed (roughly) in order of distance from Windover Farm Cottage.  Postcodes for SatNavs provided:

  • Catherine Wheel, Hemyock (01823 680224) EX15 3RQ is our closest pub and the food is fab-u-lous!

  • Exe Valley Pizza Company brings around a wood-fired pizza van which stops in Hemyock (at Longmead car park) between 5-8pm on a Friday night. Children can play in the play park whilst your food is being prepared.

  • Your Plaice or Mine is a fantastic fish and chip van (offering other street food) in Hemyock every Tuesday, again at Longmead car park between 5-8pm.  It gets busy, so allow yourself some time between ordering and collecting your food.  Children can play in the play park whilst your food is being prepared.

  • The Culm Valley Inn, Culmstock EX15 3JJ (01884 840354) is an unusual mix between a rustic country pub and a fine dining experience.  They have a great selection of gins and Fever Tree tomic waters.  I’ve recently eaten here for a lunch (whilst the kids at school!) and I had whole crab and it was exceptional (although took at age to eat!!).  Also, the pub has a village location and from there you can park up and walk along the river.
  • The Strand, Culmstock EX15 3JH (01884 840232) is a deli-come-café. Scotch eggs are to die for and home of the 'Heavonly Devonly cream tea'. Ideal to pick up a few groceries, milk and bread.
  • The Half Moon, Clayhidon EX15 3TJ (01823 680291) is a traditional pub with a smashing beer garden and offers fantastic food and a good atmosphere.
  • Viceroy, Dunkeswell EX14 4JP (01404 891825) is an an-eat in or takeaway Indian restaurant.
  • New Canton Restaurant and takeaway, Wellington TA21 8NS (01823 666662). Fantastic food but restaurant doesn’t have a website so the link to the Tripadvisor reviews is here.

  • The Ashill Inn, Ashill EX15 3NL (01884 840506) is a very old-fashioned pub which turns out exceptional food. Good portion sizes too but only a few tables so you will need to book in advance.

  • Sidmouth Arms, Upottery EX14 9PN (01404 861252) is a good old fashioned village pub with good grub.

  • The Holt Honiton EX14 1LA (01404 47707), in is a vibrant gastropub.  I’ve eaten exceptional food here and its always busy so book to avoid disappointment.

  • The Pig at Coombe, Gittisham, HonitonEX14 3AD (01404 540400) is the fifth ‘pig’ with the others being located in Hampshire, Bath and Dorset.  The setting is out of this world and perfect for a celebration.

  • Bartletts Farm Shop, Honiton EX14 3PD (01404 44375) is a smashing, small farm shop with a lovely café alongside. Its great for lunch time snacks and homemade cakes.  Grab yourself some from raw milk produced on the farm before you leave.

  • River Cottage CanteenAxminster, EX13 5AN (01297 631715) is ‘the perfect place to enjoy fresh, seasonal produce transformed into delicious dishes with a tasty River Cottage twist’.
